It’s no secret to those that know me that I am a huge Rumiko Takahashi fan– especially when it comes to her manga Ranma 1/2!
As a teenager, I read the paperback mangas and watched the series, completely amused by all the characters, stories, and of course, the dynamics between Ranma and Akane. Enormously so, that I collected anything I could from it including plush, figures, production art, and dvds. So when a fellow instagrammer pointed out to me that there was a collective for a zine– I knew I had to enter something in! The turn-out was immense for the curator with more than 100 submissions from both professional artists like myself that grew up with the series, to new fans that are revisiting it after Viz launched it on blu-ray last year. It is amazing to see so many colorful pieces showing how strong the fanbase still is after more than 25 years.
Although my favorite characters are Shampoo and Ryoga, the curator had mentioned that too many of the works turned in were heavy on both. So I decided to turn in an illustration featuring minor characters (but equally funny) Nabiki and Kuno. I went with a Breakfast at Tiffany’s theme with Nabiki playing the role of Holly Golightly and Kuno as her no-name cat. Hopefully my illustration makes it in the zine, but if not, it was still so much fun to work on a tribute to one of my childhood favorites!
